The Ninth Symphony is Gustav Mahler’s last completed work. Most of it was written in the summer of 1909 in Altschluderbach near Toblach, a place he recommended to his friend Arnold Berliner: “It is magnificent here and surely will restore body and soul.” The symphony was premiered posthumously on June 26, 1912 in Vienna, under the direction of Bruno Walter; Mahler himself never heard it.

Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 2, known as the Resurrection Symphony, was written between 1888 and 1894, and first performed in 1895. During Mahler's lifetime this symphony was one of his most popular and successful works. It was his first major work that gave expression to his views of the beauty of an afterlife and of resurrection.
